Francesco BARTOLOZZI (Florence 1725 or 26 - Lisbon 1815) "The Adoration of the Magi" Original etching and engraving with some areas of lavis, signed in the plate on the bottom right "F. Bartolozzi Sculp: ”, from a subject by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri called il Guercino (Cento 1591 - Bologna 1666). The table is part of the collection entitled "Collection of some drawings by Barberi da Cento known as Guercino, engraved in copper and presented to the singular merit of Mr. Tommaso Jenkins painter and Academician of San Luca in an act of respect by the architect and his co-academician Gio.Battista Piranesi "published in Rome by Giovanni Generoso Salomoni in 1764. Beautiful specimen in the first state of two without numbering, printed with a magnificent ink at two colors in red and black, with a delicate lavis effect on the bottom, on laid paper with watermark "Fleur de Lys in double circle over a letter A" similar to Robison 41, typical of Roman paper production of the sixties of the eighteenth century, with large margins beyond the imprint of the plate, slightly burnished and corrugated and with minimal defects on the edges, a small tear on the upper one, with a slight fold of vertical printing in the central part of the image but overall in excellent general condition. Very rare to find with such a refined inking that it makes it almost unique. The original drawing by Guercino was originally in the collection of the Venetian painter Giovan Battista Tiepolo, as can also be seen from the literal part of the engraving, at the present state of the studies there is no news of its location. Bibliography: Bettagno "Piranesi, Engravings, Branches, Bindings .."
